“Censorship tells the wrong story” is an amusing anti-censorship ad campaign by Reporters Without Borders, where images featuring political leaders are strategically pixelated to alter perception and add new meaning. Vladimir Putin engaging in self gratification, President Obama groping Hillary Clinton and David Cameron flipping the bird.

The campaign was created by the firm Ogilvy & Mather.

1. MAHATMA GANDHI

Banaras Hindu University, India, February 4, 1916

Mahatma Gandhi gave a speech in front of an audience of princes in elegant robes, and other worthies, some British, which outraged everybody and turned him into a spiritual leader for the Indian independence campaign

Having spent many years outside India, on returning to his homeland Gandhi reacquainted himself with the land of his fathers, and swapped his Western-style dress for the simple robes of a peasant. Until that time the independence campaign had been largely waged by a clique of upper-class intellectuals who aped the British in manners, but Gandhi saw this was a road to nowhere. Invited to speak at the opening of the Banaras Hindu University in front of an audience of princes in elegant robes, and other worthies, some of them British, he declared:

'There is no salvation for India unless you strip yourselves of this jewellery and hold it in trust for your country men.'

His words outraged everybody - you have to remember that this took place during World War I, when India's princes had rallied to the imperial cause - but it was a keynote speech in the struggle for Indian independence, and helped transform the nature of the debate, and turn Gandhi into the movement's spiritual leader. Tragically, Gandhi would pay for his dedication to the cause with his life, but despite the conflict that followed the declaration of Indian independence, his dream of an India free from colonial rule was achieved.

Caganers: Figurines of Pooping World Leaders in Nativity Scenes

In Catalonia - a historic territory in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, mostly in Spain and adjoining portion in southern France – a bizarre tradition is followed. During Christmas, a large model of the city of Bethlehem is created along with the typical nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, Jesus and the Shepherds. But tucked away in a corner of the model is a little figurine of a defecating Catalan peasant. It’s called the Caganer, which means shitter in Catalan.
It’s widely believed that the Caganer, by pooping, is fertilizing the Earth and thus promising a good harvest during the forthcoming year. Hence, it is a good omen. Another explanation is that the Caganer represents the equality of all people: regardless of status, race, or gender, everyone defecates. The exact origin of the Caganer is lost, but the tradition has existed since the 17th century. Originally, the Caganer was portrayed as a Catalan peasant wearing red stocking hat with a black band, but modern Caganers are often caricatures of famous people.
Surprisingly, the practice is tolerated by the local Catholic church.
